Digging for egg of endangered Maleo bird. During the six month season when the birds lay their eggs, Iwan checks twice daily for new “nests.” When he finds an egg he takes it home and puts it in a protected sand box. When it hatches he releases the bird. Iwan says there’s a 75% success rate. In the previous season he found 400 eggs. The current season is drawing to a close. To date Iwan has found 40 eggs. His grandmother received a national award for her work in protecting the eggs. Iwan is continuing her work. He has been receiving compensation of Rp300,000 per three months from the government for his work in protecting the birds. This has now been cut, so he works on a voluntary basis.
